Will American Idol Last?

April 7, 2011 Laynie Marie

American Idol is now on its 10th season. It has battled some bumps here and there over the years with controversies and judges leaving. This season they have Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, and Jennifer Lopez. The three judges seem to mesh well with the show. Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez bring two big names to the judging table.

Some seasons have had a lot of talent and others not so much. There have only been a few stars that have really kept up a hot career after being on American Idol. Some of the most known American Idol contestants are Kelly Clarkson, Kerry Underwood, and Jennifer Hudson. There are others who have done well after the show through acting and broadway. This season shows some tough competition and with who ever wins there are several people who could find strong careers after the season is over.

The Question is how much longer will the show last? I think it still has a few years under its belt if it keeps a strong panel of judges, keeps Ryan Seacrest as it’s host, and keeps the talent pouring in. Will people tire of the same show season after season? That is hard to say since each year has new contestants and the reality TV market is still booming. Also now that the show allows fifteen year olds to perform there will be an even bigger following of drooling girls/boys.

I think the main reason why American Idol is so successful is that the show itself has become appointment event tv for many adults. Simon Cowell really was ahead of his time when he came up with this show. He created a show that brought music to the forefront but at the same time was interactive with the fans. More people vote for American Idol than they do the presidency. I will be honest, I really hated this show for a long time, but it slowly grew on me. Another thing Simon did was introduce theme night. I love when they have the Beatles nights and you get to see a vocalist do something original with one of those songs. I would think the show eventually die out, but at least has a few more years left.

I don’t watch American Idol very often, and I truly thought that after this season the show would be canceled. Especially after not only Paula left but also Simon. I have been proven wrong though. I watch E! news all the time and they are constantly saying that this season is the biggest yet. More people are tuning in than ever and I think they have Steven Tyler and JLo to thank for that. Like I said, I don’t really watch the show, but I will commend them for their choice of contestants. They really do have great talent, and Carrie Underwood is one of my favorite artists. I have a feeling this show isn’t going anywhere for a long time.
